An event especially for newcomers. Join us for a discussion on the basics of freeganism – why we reject the capitalist system and how we reject it. We'll discuss the wastes and abuses of our current society and why they happen, and explore some of the practical community alternatives we are trying to build. We'll talk about the well-known practice of dumpster diving and why it makes sense in our current situation, as well as the basics of how we go about recovering the massive amount of usable food and other goods that is wasted every day. After our discussion, we'll take a trash tour to explore the area's wasted resources. If you ever wanted to try dumpster diving but couldn’t bring yourself to do it on your own, join us for this workshop and tour. At about 9pm we will leave Chashama Gallery, 112 W. 44th St. (between 6th Ave. & Broadway), for the trash tour. This event is part of Chashama's Every Day is Earth Day Exhibit.

Freegavaganza You can’t be everywhere at once… or can you? Instead of a single trash tour, we scatter in groups of two, three or more to various locations all of the city and return to display all of our findings and share them among ourselves and any passers-by who want them. For experienced and new dumpster divers alike! If you are experienced and are inconvenienced by meeting first, do your own dumpster dive and come to the after-gathering to display and share your findings. When and Where: If you are new or willing to meet first to help lead your own trashtour, come at 8:30pm to Union Square North, on 17th St. across from the Barnes & Noble. Try to be prompt as we will only meet briefly to organize buddies and locations. We all meet again at 10:45pm at Union Square South on 14th Street on the steps across from Whole Foods. Call Janet for details: (347) 724-6954.
