Newcomers are always welcome, but our trailblazes are best for experienced foragers who are interested in helping us explore a neighborhood we are less familiar with to add to our long list of locations to recommend to others. Not a sure bet-- you may not find the same abundance as on our "established" routes-- but you may go home with unexpected treasures. NOT open to media, so a good one for the camera shy. Our starting point will be the new freegan bike workshop at 123 Tompkins in Bushwick, Brooklyn, near the Myrtle stop on the J,M,Z train or the Willoughby stop on the G train. If you get there late (please don't be late, we'll be on the move!) or can't find us, call Janet's cell at 347-724-6954.

This event especially welcomes those who are just learning about the practice of freeganism, including urban foraging. We will discuss the freegan philosophy and motivations as well as give practical tips on the scavenging of discarded products. Then, after about 45 minutes of discussion, we will take a tour of retail waste in the Morningside Heights area. NOT open to the media. For more information, see http://freegan.info

Trashy Movie Night Presented by Freegan.info and hosted by Times Up! 7/26 Thurs: Trashy Movie Night 8 PM, Time's Up!, 49 E. Houston St, between Mott and Mulberry (R or W to Prince, B, D, F, V to Broadway-Lafayette, 6 to Bleecker)
Our global culture of mass production, overconsumption, wasteful packaging and planned obsolescence has created a massiven environmental crisis: GARBAGE. Landfills and incinerators leach and spew toxic chemicals into our land, air, and water, and landfill offgassing is a significant contributor to global warming. Join Freegan.info for a series of short films exploring the politics and perils of our global garbage crisis. And learn how wastepickers in Argentina and in New York City have turned collecting recyclables for deposit and resale into a means of economic survival.
Donald Blank, creator of Tossed and Found, will introduce his film and take audience questions.
Films will include:
Tossed and Found (44 minutes) A flim by Donald Blank Jorge, Tom, Joe are among many street people engaged in "street entrepreneurship" -- living off the goods discarded by others or the odds and ends available -- the modern urban scavenger. They retrieve everything from toys to scrap metal in this itinerant trade. A fascinating study of modern urban survival and individual ingenuity. Notes: Among those interviewed also include Philip [a street book vendor and 'Hubcap' Joe .
Los Cartoneros (22 minutes) A film by Mike McLean In Argentina there are people who live entirely off collecting cardboard from the streets to recycle it for money. This is a documentary about these people.
10 Things We Love to Hate...Garbage (30 minutes) Produced by Beyond Productions A look at the garbage crisis-- featuring Freegan.info!
