On September 28th I attended a protest campout in skid row, and learned much about the criminalization and harassment of the homeless in downtown Los Angeles. One of the moving speakers that spoke at the event was Steve (General Dogon) Richardson, who I've invited to come to our upcoming video potluck. He gladly accepted and is bringing a short documentary that was made by a local filmaker.

Bring some food to share, watch a film about the war against the poor in downtown Los Angeles and meet others interested in dumpster diving, freegansim, living simply, reducing consumption and caring about the environment. We'll head out to go bin raiding at around 10:00 PM.

Steve (General Dogon) Richardson, an organizer from Los Angeles Community Action Network will be attending to talk about L.A. CAN activities. Their goals include:

  • Organize and empower community residents to work collectively to change the relationships of power that affect our community.
  • Create an organization and organizing model that eradicate the race, class, gender barriers that are used to prevent communities from building true power.
  • Eliminate the multiple forms of violence used against and within our community to maintain status quo.

If you can, bring something homegrown, or rescued from a dumpster. If not, something from the farmers market or locally grown would be great. If nothing else, just bring something to share. Indicate what you are bringing as an RSVP comment.

Please consider walking, biking, taking public transit or carpooling to this event. For information on public transportation visit http://metro.net...

Freeganism
Freegans are people who employ alternative strategies for living based on limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources. Freegans embrace community, generosity, social concern, freedom, cooperation, and sharing in opposition to a society based on materialism, moral apathy, competition, conformity, and greed.

    •  Our scheduled speaker didn't show up, but fortunately the local filmmaker who made the piece we showed did come. He presented for us and really engaged the whole group (Thanks, Ernie!). We also had great food and a successful dumpster dive afterwards.

We eat some delicious food and I met some new and interesting people. This potluck made for some great discussion. We discussed the criminalization of homelessness, about the wealthy running our city and country, and how to fight back. We talked about how civil disobedience is one of our strongest tools to fight back. 6 of us went bin raiding after wards and rescued a trunk-load of food.
    •  I learned a lot and enjoyed our discussion. Also got some tips on documentaries and books to check out.
